  • Grant Wood created this self-portrait using pointillism, a technique that uses tiny dots of color to create an image, rather than using brushstrokes. The artist was known for frequently wearing overalls and he originally painted this work with them on. Grant later decided to cover his white shirt and overalls with the heavy blue pigment that now represents a shirt. Creator: Grant Wood (American, 1891–1942) Date: 1941 Original Medium: Oil on masonite Original Size: 14 × 11 3/4 in. Location: Figge Art Museum
